Public Safety

Columbia is one of the safest urban campuses in the country, according to statistics compiled by the University’s Public Safety Department, which compiles a security report each year. The most recent report is available here. However, it's important to remember that we’re still an urban campus and crimes, while rare, do sometimes occur. Theft has historically been our biggest problem, so don’t leave personal property unattended in classrooms, labs or offices, and don’t prop open locked stairwell doors.

Should a problem arise, one of your first calls – if not the first call – should be to Public Safety. Officers there can cut through red tape at the NYPD and have the 411 information necessary to quickly report stolen credit cards, etc. Public Safety also can quickly dispatch medical personnel.
